Appointments

When

Clinic appointments for private patients are held on Friday afternoons, from 15.00 to 18.00.

Where

Consultations take place at the Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre, Moorfields Eye Hospital, 3 Peerless Street, London EC1V 9EZ.

The nearest Underground station is Old Street and the nearest National Rail station is King’s Cross. Moorfields is accessible by taxi from all central London locations.

If you are driving yourself, please remember that Moorfields is just within the boundary of the Congestion Charge Zone and street parking is limited.

What to bring

When you come, please try and bring with you:

  • any glasses your child may have may wear, along with your latest optician's prescription

  • copies of your medical records, if your child has had previous squint surgery or are seeking a second opinion

What to expect

First your child will be seen by one of Mr Ali's Orthoptists who will carry out a detailed assessment of your vision, squint and eye movements. This will take around 20 minutes. Then your child will have drops put in their eyes to make the pupils larger. Please note the drops make your child's vision blurry for a few hours afterwards. Then, after about 20-30 minutes, your child will see a children's optometrist who will carry out an accurate test for glasses. Finally, you will see Mr Ali, who will conduct further assessment and discuss your child's issues and and treatment options. The whole process can take 1-2 hours so please bring along something to entertain your child, and a drink and snack.

Fees

You do not need to have UK medical insurance to come as a private patient. Typically an initial visit with 3-in-1 appointments with Mr Ali and his orthoptist and optometrist costs £400. If you are planning for surgery, a full quotation will be provided before you commit.

UK insured patients

As of June 2013, Mr Ali is no longer dealing with UK insurance companies. If you have UK medical insurance (BUPA, AXA PPP etc), and would like to see Mr Ali, you will need to come as a self-pay patient.
